Dates for your Diary Updated : 24/01/2012 Telecare and Telehealth Suppliers Please Note!! The London Telecare SUPPLIERS' FORUM meets for the first time on Tuesday 7th February at City Hall Westminster, starting at 10am. It's a great opportunity to co-ordinate action on a number of issues, plan activities for the Group, and make sure that your views are heard by LT's Executive Committee. Our first 'Service Providers' event for 2012 was an Interactive Workshop 'Exploring connections between telecare services and the wider world of helplines' hosted by The Helplines Association at their offices in London SE1 on 19th January. It was an interesting presentation covering the scope of THA, followed by a workshop where we split up into groups and considered aspects of training and education for those answering calls from the public. Codes of Practice were discussed, along with KPIs and the different needs of callers - those with real emergency situations being different from those simply calling in to register going off duty, a courtesy call or other non-urgent calls. Areas of common ground were noted, and we shall report back to the next Quarterly Meeting of LTG. This is on Friday 27th January - our Quarterly Meeting for all service provider members held at City Hall Westminster, 9.30am - 12.30pm at 64 Victoria St, London SW1 6QP. Please join us! On Friday 3rd February there's our Improve your Bid and Tender Success Rate Seminar run by Paul Gee, 10am - 1pm at Westminster City Hall. Come along to learn how to understand and use the ‘tricks of the trade’. It’s based on hard won experience - on the latest rounds of the Technology Strategy Board bid process. You will learn how to: * Understand the true requirement of the ‘spec’ * Answer the question that is being asked * Know when not to tender * Develop a compelling submission * Communicate a competitive proposition Contact us to reserve your place. |

Assistive Technology & Telecare Interactive Workshop Updated : 19/08/2011 On 19th August, 10.30am - 12.30pm at London Borough of Newham, Holden Point, Waddington Road we held an assistive technology and telecare interactive workshop. Places were limited for this interactive workshop facilitated by Jeff and Mike Dines of EasyLink UK, which ran from 10.30am and finished after 2pm. Around 16 members made the journey, and were not disappointed! The presentation featured all of the new Easylink products aimed at the dementia and telehealth markets, including MemRabel, Rondish cordless alarms systems, and epilepsy monitors. Members were given every opportunity to ask questions relating to their own individual cases. Several pieces of kit were given a thorough run down, and we were shown how easy it was to program sensors for individual needs. The Easylink ethos centres on reliability and simplicity of operation, and Mike Dines has offered to arrange further training sessions for any interested members. Lambeth and Croydon were particularly keen for a follow-up meeting, and if others are interested they should contact Mike Dines on 01536 264 869. After the workshop, sandwiches and refreshments were served on the top floor of Holden Point, which gave members an opportunity to view the Olympic Village from the special observation gallery. There was plenty of time for photographs, and all points of interest were explained by our guide from Newham Council. We are grateful to Rebecca Watson-Morse and her Newham colleagues for organising this useful and informative day, and for Mike and Jeff Dines and Billy McTaggart for travelling down to see us, and for their hospitality over the buffet lunch.

A Telehealth Forum - Exploring a different perspective on services Updated : 19/07/2011 Another successful Forum - free to all members of London Telecare, this time combining Telecare and Telehealth issues, was held in association with Cirrus Communication Systems on 19th July 2011. It took place at the Royal College of Physicians, a superb venue off Regents Park, London, attended by over 60 members and guests. It was a great success with keynote presentations on: • New Ways of Working - Integrating telecare to enhance support for new client groups - presented by Sarah Ward of Bournemouth Churches Housing Association (photo below, left). • Telehealth : wondercure or waste of money? - presented by Dr. A Nowlan, Companion Health Ltd (2nd rt, below) • Telehealth monitoring, advice and support service – it’s not just about technology - presented by Carl Atkey, CarelineUK and Mark Stevens, CentriHealth (2nd left, below, and far left) After the presentations there was a 'Question Time' panel session chaired by Doug Miles, Chairman of London Telecare. The forum provided visitors with a chance to learn more about the issues and opportunities in the emerging area of telehealth. Following the presentations there was an opportunity to network with colleagues over a drink and canapés and afterwards groups of us enjoyed a tour of the college's medicinal garden, originally planted in 1965. We were treated to a fascinating talk on the properties of the herbs and plants shown, some good and some not so healthy! The event was developed and hosted by one of our support organisations Cirrus Communication Systems, a leading equipment maintenance and installation provider for the telecare and telehealth markets.

London Telecare has received many messages of appreciation for the event, praising both the information on hand and the ambience of the venue. "We were able to get advice about our telecare problems without having to rush off to a seminar or presentation," was a typical comment. London Telecare spreads its wings Updated : 26/05/2011 May 2011 has been a busy month for Doug Miles and John Chambers as they have been travelling about the south of England meeting telecare and telehealth professionals. On May 18th a meeting with members of CAMEO took place at Leatherhead, hosted by Alex Page of Mole Valley Telecare. Many current issues were discussed, and LT has invited CAMEO members to join their London meetings and the MarketPlace event in Worthing, and become full members of the organisation. Then on May 19th, LT went to see Cirrus and CareLineUK in New Milton, Hampshire, to explore areas of future co-operation and joint events for this Summer. We next caught up with the latest TyneTec products which were demonstrated at their Gatwick Roadshow on 24th May. LT members can purchase all of these products at advantageous rates - just mention you are a member! The next meeting for all members is our MarketPlace Event at St Paul's Centre, Worthing, on 1st June, from 10.30am - 3.30pm. Quarterly Meeting and AGM Updated : 13/05/2011 Around two dozen telecare professionals attended the above meeting on 13th May at Westminster City Hall. Chairman Doug Miles reported a year of further expansion of membership and group activities for London Telecare. He welcomed nine new Support Members who valued the exposure their products and services gained through the free-to-members MarketPlace Events and Workshops, which are regular features of our programme during the year. Co-director John Chambers reported that growing membership and Doug's consultancy work had increased revenue by over 37% for the year, but added that the cost of building up the London Telecare brand and its services to members has meant that we shall be carrying forward a loss of £13k into the current year to 31 March 2012. Taking last year's small profit and this loss together, this has meant a deficit of just £5k per year in real terms. In the context of expanding our services, this is seen as an acceptable result. Our aim is to continue to expand our membership base to include other telecare and telehealth services within reach of our London meetings, and to extend our membership to all interested Support Members. We shall encourage sponsorship of our Events Programme, which will enable most of our meetings and workshops to be free as part of our membership package. This was seen to be a much valued and unique benefit by those present at the AGM. There was plenty of time for open discussion of current issues raised by members, and there was general endorsement of the proposed programme for the year ahead. There followed two excellent presentations of telecare and telehealth equipment by Pedro Pereira of Turun UK (seen right below), with endorsements from Eddie Morris at Harrow Telecare (who is trialing their bed sensors). Mike Dines of Easylink UK (left) then demonstrated a wide range of sensors for monitoring people with epilepsy or dementia. The meeting ended at 1pm.

London Telecare Group and Cirrus Round Table : The Future of Telecare (Part 2) Updated : 04/11/2010 ![]() Seated left to right: Peter White, Camden; Carl Atkey, CarelineUK, Paul Saunders and Paul Allis, Cirrus; Standing left to right: Kevin Williamson, Westminster City Council; John Chambers, London Telecare; Julie Kasztanowski, Camden Council; David Martin Hesp, North Hertfordshire Borough Council; Leslie Morson, The London Borough of Ealing. On October 27 2010 participants from Camden Council, Westminster City Council, London Borough of Ealing Council and North Hertfordshire Borough Council attended a round table following 'The Future of Telecare' seminar held in July at Vinopolis by The London Telecare Group and Cirrus. This round table held at the Enterprise Rooms, Victoria was set up to continue the debate and discussion surrounding the implications of Next Generation Networks and the impact on the Telecare marketplace. The working group made some extremely useful points about the future of telecare and had valuable insights into what the market needs from an operational point of view and the financial challenges they now face, following the Comprehensive Spending Review held on the 20 October. When you consider the combined customer base that Westminster, Camden, Ealing and North Herts have between them, that is a significant part of London and the SE's connections, especially as Westminster are now talking to Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham about a possible ‘SuperCouncil’ - which could signal further centralised service provision in the future. These forums provide the opportunity for open dialogue and sharing of ideas as well as the individual challenges they are facing. The outputs need to feed ideas to the policy makers, so that what appears to be good sense to the budget makers also answers the operational needs at the point of delivery to the public. Working together, we can all make a contribution to this ongoing debate, and the TSA conference in November will provide the next opportunity to air these views. Some of the points discussed were: • What equipment should commissioners and procurement bodies buy, that will meet the needs of today’s customers and not be out of date in the near future? • Why is the basic emergency alarm equipment so expensive? Surely a basic response kit could be produced more cheaply? • Future market is going mobile – so less demand for hard-wire based systems could mean compatibility problems? • Should service providers own the kit or buy into a complete, managed monitored service? • Confusion of the relevance of ‘Class 1’ standard for individual emergency alarms • Telecare Control Centres face real opportunities for growth by mergers, but call handling and responding with local knowledge is often preferred to remote call handling. • There is a new NVQ for call handlers which should improve training standards. • Individuals should be at the centre of care and Department of Health, local authorities and social care should have a joined up view of the individual • Greater focus on removing CAPEX costs from future spend, could lead to a greater outsourcing and managed service approach for the delivery of telecare/telehealth services • GP’s involvement in commissioning health budgets will have an impact on the delivery and decision making for the provision of telecare and telehealth i.e. potentially taking the procurement and decision making away from the local authorities. A more comprehensive report will be circulated by Cirrus and London Telecare in due course. Our thanks go to Cirrus for hosting this workshop at the Enterprise Rooms. |

TSA Code of Practice - Revisions Explained Updated : 18/10/2010 On Friday 15th October, Marian Preece, Operations Manager of TSA gave a guided tour of the latest additions and revisions to the Code of Practice. The meeting was held in the Enterprise Rooms in Great Peter Street, Westminster, and 15 members received valuable guidance on how to achieve compliance with the revised Code. There was ample time set aside for questions from individual service providers, and members were encouraged to give the TSA more feedback on any issues that may arise from the new Code. In particular, concerns were expressed about call handling performance criteria, and these will be responded to by the TSA when raised by members. The meeting ran from 10am to 1pm and was well received by those attending. Our thanks go both to Enterprise plc for hosting the event for London Telecare, and to Marian Preece for making the presentation - and the journey!

MARKETPLACE EVENT in WESTMINSTER Updated : 22/09/2010 Another successful MarketPlace Event for members took place on Friday 17th September at the Enterprise Rooms, just a short distance from Westminster Abbey. It was the day The Pope came to London, and despite the expected traffic restrictions, over 30 of us gathered throughout the morning to meet up with the 10 telecare companies who had set out their tables and displayed their wares. We were once again grateful to Enterprise plc for providing the venue. London Telecare members seemed very pleased to have the opportunity to talk freely and without pressure to their contacts over cups of coffee and biscuits. There was a full range of telecare equipment on view, from the latest GPS tracking devices to fully integrated monitoring and response services. Another similar event is planned for early 2011, so details will be circulated to all members. Please let us know if you are not on our emailing list.

THIRD SUMMER EVENT FOR MEMBERS Updated : 03/08/2010 The third of London Telecare's Summer Events took place on the morning of 3rd August at Westminster City Hall, Victoria Street, London. Rather than focus on the more traditional approach of Telecare being utilised reactively, the workshop focussed on the application and implementation of Preventative Telecare, which as well as providing a reactionary element, also facilitated lifestyle monitoring and subsequent early intervention opportunities. The workshop was run by Samantha Davies and Kieran McCausland of TyneTec (pictured below), who introduced their latest equipment and described its suitability for a range of reactive and preventative telecare situations. With around 20 members attending, delegates broke into groups and were soon engaged in testing their knowledge on a series of 4 case studies, where typical real life situations were presented. Each group then made an assessment of the appropriate telecare/telehealth package for each client, and compared their findings with the others groups present. This interactive format proved very popular, and an interesting discussion followed, with members sharing their thoughts and experiences of similar cases and assessments that they had been involved with. It was three hours well spent, according to most members, and will no doubt lead to further workshops in the future.

SECOND SUMMER EVENT FOR MEMBERS Updated : 28/07/2010 South East Health Assisted Living (SEH Ltd) hosted a crucial seminar for London Telecare and the assisted living market on Wednesday 28th July at The Department of Business Innovation and Skills, Victoria St, London. The event was the second in a series of ground breaking London Telecare events, this one looking at “The Role of the Control Centre – 30 years on!”. Doug Miles, LT Chairman welcomed some 35 delegates who were then treated to a presentation by Richard Foggie from the Dept of BIS, who gave an overview of the protocols and interoperability issues currently seeking a resolution in the world of assistive technology.
|
|
PRESENTATIONS Updated : 28/07/2010 Ron Owttrim, CEO of SEH Ltd, then explained the range of services that SEH have developed to meet the needs of assisted living services to enhance call monitoring and deploy more cost effective ways of meeting out-of-hours monitoring. He described in some detail how SEH is structured to respond to these anticipated clinical needs, both for assisted living response calls and where clinical advice was required. He introduced Mary Jones, Director of Operations and Clinical Services, and then Caralyn Tettmar, Head of Contact Centre Services who both outlined how expertise had been gathered to answer the future needs of a truly integrated monitoring and response service. Peter Kerly, Managing Director of SEH went on to describe how the future role of Control Centres needed to change, against the background of the white paper on a National Care Service. Managing and consolidating budgets in a time of austerity and cut backs would inevitably mean that smaller call centres would no longer be viable using their present business model, but all Control Centres could have a huge role to play in introducing both open protocol technology and service driven solutions into the Health and Social Care arena. The integration of an open protocol solution which is integrated into the NHS N3 spine offers a unique solution which will be the platform to save all the CC’s in the UK from being subject to financial review. KMPG’s Helen Isaac outlined the detailed Case for Telehealth, as published in their ‘Switch On’ document. While the case for assistive technology is growing, with a number of pilots and trials in place across the UK (WSD etc), it is still something of a leap of faith for many organisations to implement telehealth in the absence of hard results and predictable outcomes. Everyone knows it will happen, but when?! (left to right: Doug Miles, Peter Kerly, Richard Foggie, Ron Owttrim and Helen Isaac)
|
|
QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION Updated : 28/07/2010 A stimulating question and answer session was chaired by Doug Miles, and many issues were raised by London Telecare members. These ranged from a discussion about the diverse skills needed to deal with clinical issues from callers, to queries about how to retain the local knowledge and familiarity currently provided by local call centre personnel – would databases be able to provide such detailed information to call handlers? On the whole, it was reassuring to know that many of these issues had already been addressed and that the technology is in place. But the overall question about ‘Where to from here?’ was left as the basis for further discussion with SEH on a case by case approach, by arrangement with Peter Kerly and Fred Reardon. There was plenty of time for networking during the event, with coffee breaks and a buffet lunch provided.

CIRRUS HOSTS LONDON TELECARE EVENT ON 'THE FUTURE OF TELECARE' Updated : 14/07/2010 On Wednesday 14th July 2010 more than 35 London Telecare members debated the future of telecare services in London at a seminar held in London. Gathering at Vinopolis on London’s South Bank, three industry figures presented their views on what will shape telecare in 2010 and beyond. The panel of speakers were: • Claire Mitchell, Department of Health discussed The Fast Track Implementation Programme for Assistive Technologies. • Raffaella Somma from Lambeth Borough Council - shared her Business Case Preparation for Telecare which outlined the steps involved in securing funding. • Carl Atkey, Head of CarelineUK and Technical lead for Cirrus outlined the implications for Telecare imposed by Next Generation Networks.

PANEL & DISCUSSION Updated : 14/07/2010 Chaired by Doug Miles, Chair of The London Telecare Group, the panel contributed to a lively debate on a wide range of topics with questions posed by guests. The implications of BT having formally announced it is abandoning its current plans for BT21 CN were strongly debated. Carl Atkey Head of CarelineUK and Technical lead for Cirrus, comments: “This move by BT is a significant development for the industry. However, with a number of other Next Generation Networks (NGNs) including Virgin Media, SKY and TalkTalk, which all share similar characteristics to the BT21CN network, being NGN/BT21CN compliant is still key. Telecare service providers who still have non-BT21CN complaint equipment could be at risk of intermittent alarm communication failures.” A key point that was highlighted was that the majority of alarm receiving centres are supported by the BT network, alarm calls from service users using other telephone service providers must transition across networks. This increases the risk that alarm equipment will fail because of the increase in complexity of the path taken by the alarm signals over the networks. Carl Atkey continues: “It is recommended that telecare service providers collect and record information from service users in relation to the supplier of their telephony provision. Where this is other than BT, reference should be made to the terms and conditions of the contract with the service user to determine whether that telephony supplier’s service supports social alarms. If the terms and conditions indicate that social alarms are not supported, the service user should be informed that there is a potential risk that the social alarm, when used, may not get through to the monitoring centre”.

Doug Miles and John Chambers additionally ran two workshops on the direct marketing of telecare to the public focussing on the use of bus shelter and shopping precinct posters, which have created great impact around London. Over 60 delegates attended these workshops where the 'back to basics' approach was well received. It is hoped that these ideas will be followed up around the country using London Telecare's unique approach. |

London Telecare goes to NHS Direct at Beckenham Updated : 22/09/2008 Our visit to the Beckenham Call Centre on 17th September was very informative and has opened up a number of areas of partnership working. Adam Duncan, the Regional Director of Nursing presented the facts and figures on how the centre handles its calls, along with Tracy Sibley, the Service Delivery Manager. Chrys Short, Regional Head of Operations agreed that there was great potential for closer links, particularly in responding to the needs of telecare's primary client base of older and more vulnerable people, often living alone. The outcome of the meeting is that the working party will now establish a pilot project to explore areas of mutual benefit, and report back to LT members. We shall be preparing an agenda for further working party meetings, and would welcome comments and suggestions from all interested members. |

London Telecare was launched ! Updated : 07/11/2005 London Telecare is now the new name for London Carelines, representing the marketing of the various Telecare Services provided to their local communities by London's 32 boroughs. This striking poster was one of 40 posters that went up all over Croydon at the time of the launch. These poster sites are operated by JCDecaux in many London boroughs, and local boroughs' Telecare Services can book space in advance, usually at no cost, by contacting their local Council publicity department. However demand for local services advertising is heavy, so an early application is recommended. |
